Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is — through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. The film in out on general release in UK cinemas on 18 October.
Thor The Dark World New Clips
Check out some new official clips for Marvel sequel Thor The Dark World. The film stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin). Directed by Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor, the much anticipated sequel sees Thor battle an ancient race of Dark Elves led by the vengeful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) who threatens to plunge the universe back into darkness after the events of The Avengers.
Saoirse Ronan Confirms Star Wars Audition
Actress Saoirse Ronan has confirmed that recent rumors have for once proven true and that she has in fact auditioned for a role in the new Star Wars films. Having recently dismissed unfounded speculation that she was set to star in Avengers sequel Age of Ultron the actress was keen to stress that her involvement in Star Wars was by no means certain yet.
Ronan admitted she had read for a part but was quick to caution ‘so has everyone’. It’s unclear which part she may have been in consideration for although it’s expected the new trilogy will focus on the children of Han, Lea and Luke. In potentially unrelated news it’s also rumored there may be a new female villain for introduced in Episode VII.
Peter Dinklage Talks X-Men Days Of Future Past
Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is playing scientist Bolivar Trask in X-Men Days Of Future Past and recently spoke about the role. As comicbook fans may be aware his character plays a key role in creating one of the most memorable and menacing threats the X-Men face, the giant robotic Sentinals. However Dinklage is eager to stress that he didn’t simply wan to play the stereotypical villain
“He’s a man of science, he’s a man of invention. He actually sees what he’s doing as a good thing. [His ambition is] definitely blind and he’s quite arrogant. He’s strived all his life for a certain respect and attention.”
Given the alternate history story arc in the new sequel it’s perhaps unsurprising that Trask will find himself up against a real life iconic menacing figure… As Dinklage explains.
“He’s up against Richard Nixon, he’s got some hurdles.”
Narnia Sequel The Silver Chair Confirmed
The Narnia movie franchise based on the beloved children’s classic of C.S. Lewis have already hauled in over $1.6 billion at the box office. The combined financial success has proved enough incentive for producers Mark Gordon and Douglas Gresham to revive plans to adapt the next book in the saga The Silver Chair.
Many Narnia fans had feared the diminishing success of previous sequels would prevent another films ever becoming a reality. Follow ups Prince Caspian and Voyage of The Dawn Treader each took in just over half what Disney’s first effort The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe did.
The Silver Chair is unlikely to feature many of the cast of the previous films though as the book marked the first in the series not to focus on the main heroes of the earlier adventures.
